Salmon School Garden Manager Description 2024 

Overview: The Salmon School Garden is an educational garden providing learning opportunities and healthy foods to students and the community in Lemhi County. The Garden Manager is responsible for the garden being maintained as a healthy, sustainable and productive ecosystem with the help of volunteers and interns from cooperating partners. The Garden Manager may also be requested to have a role in the educational programs in the Garden including assisting with, coordinating and teaching  workshops.

Employee of: Salmon School Garden 

Dates of Employment: Part-time Seasonal Position. Approximately March 1 through October 31 at 20 hours per week average. Limited hours as requested by the Garden Committee November 1 – February 28, generally less than 2 hours per week. Position does not qualify for overtime or paid holidays. 

Pay rate: $15.00 per hour 

Job Duties

  • Assist in preparation for fundraisers including but not limited to plant sale (May) and pumpkin patch (October) 

  • Coordinate with ag classes on starting plants, transplanting, moving and watering plants

  • Coordinate “garden jobs” with ag teacher and students in the garden 

  • Responsible for watering and maintaining lawn, garden beds, and trees as healthy, eye appealing ecosystem 

  • Preparing beds for classes to come plant 

  • Coordinate interns from partner organizations when working in the Garden

  • Communication with the Garden Committee on a regular basis and attending monthly Garden Committee meetings 

  • Communicating with the volunteers regarding volunteer’s needs and tasks 

  • Assisting and coordinating with Garden Committee members and teachers regarding  educational programming held in the Garden 

  • Harvesting and preparing produce for the distribution to students and the community

  • Coordinating with local lawn mowing service 

  • Providing information for annual appeal and newsletters when asked 

Job Requirements: 

  • Ability to pass a background check 

  • Knowledge of basic gardening and lawn maintenance 

  • Ability to, at minimum, assist with educational programming, with coordinating and teaching being preferable 

  • Professional, courteous communication with Garden Committee members, teachers and the community 

  • Hold a valid drivers license

Job Hours: 

  • Flexible schedule to be coordinated with supervisor 

  • Some evenings and weekends required 

  • Schedule influenced by activities and programs in the garden
